Arrive. Pick up your rental car, take I-275 to the St. Petersburg / Clearwater International Airport exit, 31B, and check into your hotel. When I made this trip, I tried both the Comfort Inn (3580 Ulmerton Road, Clearwater; 727-573-1171) and the Courtyard by Marriott (3131 Executive Drive, Clearwater; 727-572-8484) at this exit. Both were suitable, clean, and affordable. They were also the perfect launching point for the itinerary.
You’re probably tired, so take it easy today. If you arrive early, head west from the hotel and spend the day at the beach. If you arrive later in the day, spend the afternoon or evening at the St. Petersburg Pier. It’s a beauty — with shops, restaurants, and a small aquarium. You can pay to feed the pelicans. Or rent fishing poles and try your luck in the waters of Tampa Bay. Whatever you do, get home early because you have a big day ahead of you.
