Florida Spring Training: Your Guide To Touring The Grapefruit League |
No stadium in the Grapefruit League has a better location than Progress Energy Park. From the grandstands, you can watch sailboats come in and out of Tampa Bay. Before the game, you can walk along the water’s edge or visit several St. Petersburg attractions -— all without moving your car. After the game, there are lots of restaurants and bars to sate your hunger and thirst, and they’re all within walking distance. If only the stadium lived up to its surroundings. This is a tired old park that looks as if it needs a heavy face-lift, or at least a paint job. It is, in my opinion, the worst place to watch a Spring Training game in Florida. That’s not to say that it’s all bad here. Progress Energy Park is a good place to get an autograph. The trivia contests held between innings are fun for spectators and participants — and award the best prizes in the Grapefruit League. And die-hard fans will enjoy the sign on the concourse that relates the long history of baseball in St. Petersburg, a place where Babe Ruth once swung his bat. Still, what you’ll most likely remember are the unofficial guests who pay nothing to watch the game and always arrive near the end of the seventh inning. Those guests are flocks and flocks of seagulls. Now, don’t misunderstand, there are seagulls at plenty of Florida ballparks. There’s just a whole heck of a lot more seagulls at Progress Energy Park.
