Florida Spring Training: Your Guide To Touring The Grapefruit League
New York Mets: Introduction

Can $10 million make a stadium perfect? No, but that amount of money certainly went a long way to improving Tradition Field, the spring home of the New York Mets. The improvements made after the 2003 Spring Training season have moved the stadium up the charts from one of the worst in the Grapefruit League to above average. The one major flaw that remains could only be remedied by replacing the stadium with a new one.

That flaw is the stadium’s size. While capacity is about average, the park looks big, especially from inside the stadium. That’s because most of the seats are packed into relatively small grandstands. Instead of stretching the stands out to the end of the first and third base lines, the stands end just a few sections past the dugouts. As a result, many seats are high above the playing field. But the renovation did add a few rows of additional seating right behind home plate. If you sit in there, you’ll be really close to the action.

It also seems easier to get autographs now. Before the improvements, you were relegated to asking for autographs on the Mets practice fields two hours before the game. Now, you can get an autograph or two right from the field, because the bullpen has been moved close to the new seating area.

The ballpark also looks better, inside and out. As you walk up to the stadium, you’ll immediately spot new signage, a brick façade, and better fencing. Together, they give Tradition Field the look of the old time stadiums.

Inside, the most impressive change is the addition of a berm just past the right field wall. While other stadiums have berms that are bigger or taller, this one has restrooms and a concession stand at the top. The roof is a special plus if there is a quick rainstorm or you find you need to get out of the sun.
