Florida Spring Training: Your Guide To Touring The Grapefruit League
Florida Marlins / St. Louis Cardinals: Introduction

Perhaps the most memorable happening at Roger Dean Stadium for me personally was that I remembered to put on sunscreen before I went the ballpark. If I hadn’t, I would have looked as red as the St. Louis Cardinals’ uniforms.

While the sun beats down on most of the baseball parks in Florida, Roger Dean is probably the sunniest stadium in the Grapefruit League. There is no roof anywhere over the grandstands. For those northerners who come to Florida expecting — no, wanting — a sunburn, this is the perfect park. If you don’t enjoy the pain sun exposure brings and you can’t be bothered to protect yourself, it might be a wise idea to pass on a game here. But that would be a mistake. If you pass, you will miss one of the top five stadiums in the Grapefruit League.

Roger Dean Stadium offers the best of both the new and the old and is full of great surprises. Built in 1998, it is one of the newer parks in the Grapefruit League. Its architecture and construction make it look as appealing as Walt Disney World’s Cracker Jack Stadium and any other park in the League. Yet it’s built with an old time feel and a wonderful intimacy. You can reach out and almost touch the players from every seat. It’s unfortunate that other parks of its era did not follow its lead in capturing the essence of Spring Training.

Even walking in to Roger Dean Stadium, you can tell it is different. The walkway area is designed to look like a small town with row houses and tree-lined streets. The ticket area is paved brick, complete with first-class landscaping.
