While Winter Haven is just a short distance from the theme parks in Orlando, there is plenty to do in Polk County, the spring home of the Indians. You’ll find the county convention and visitors bureau web site at http://www.sunsational.org.

Note: The list of attractions here is the same as in Chapter 7, but the restaurants, sports bars, and hotels are different.

Cypress Gardens

Cypress Gardens, home to lush tropical gardens, pretty Southern Belles, and acrobatic water ski shows, was Florida’s original theme park. It closed in 2003, but it is being revived as an all-round amusement park, complete with roller coasters. It also features live musical performances, the water ski shows that made the original park famous, and lush, walk-through botanical gardens.

Historic Bok Sanctuary

Hours: Daily 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Admission: Adults $10; Children (5 to 12) $3
Bok Tower, a National Historic monument, is a tall, beautifully crafted Art Deco carillon surrounded by elaborate gardens and acres of longleaf pine forest. Edward W. Bok, a Dutch immigrant who made his fortune here, commissioned the tower as his gift to the American people. You can hear a 45-minute open-air carillon concert here every afternoon at 3:00 p.m. (included in the admission).

The National Historic District of Lake Wales, Florida

Located in downtown Lake Wales, the district features a variety of galleries full of art and antiques, along with beautiful architecture and a series of lovely murals relating the history of the area. Top-rated restaurants offer the ultimate in Florida dining and, after dark, offer music for listening and dancing.

Fantasy of Flight

Admission: Adults $26.95, Seniors (55+) $24.95, Children (6 to 15) $13.95
Incredibly realistic “immersion experiences” take you through the history of flight. You’ll even get to experience a World War II bombing run in a real B-17 bomber. Afterwards, you can visit a hangar full of vintage aircraft and fly sorties in one of eight flight simulators (no extra charge). Come in the afternoon to see one of the vintage aircraft taken aloft and put through its paces.

Explorations V Children’s Museum

109 North Kentucky Avenue, Lakeland; 863-687-3869
Hours: Monday to Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Admission: Adults $2, Children (2 to 15) $4
This downtown kids’ museum, features a child-sized grocery store, news station, recycling area, airplane, and more.

Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings at Florida Southern College

111 Lake Hollingsworth Drive, Lakeland; 863-680-4110; www.flsouthern.edu/fllwctr
Hours: Grounds open 24 hours a day; Visitor Center Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Admission: Free
Wright designed 12 of this liberal arts college’s buildings, including the planetarium. Brochures for a self-guided walking tour can be found in a clear plastic box in the parking lot between the Admissions and Administration Buildings. Look for the red and white sign. The Visitor Center contains a small collection of furniture, photos, drawings, and small gifts related to the Wright buildings.
