Newsweek magazine named Sarasota the best beach and baseball combo in Florida. The beaches are great here, but so are the other natural attractions and the shopping. Since the beaches are easy to find, we offer some suggestions for other area attractions and activities. Consult the Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau web site, www.sarasotafl.org, for additional ideas.

Mote Aquarium

Exhibits here include a 135,000-gallon shark habitat, sea turtles, jellyfish, two touch pools, and manatees. Also see Mote’s research in action through viewable labs.

G.Wiz Hands-On Science Museum

Experience an array of interactive, hands-on exhibits designed for all ages.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Admission: Adults $12, Seniors (62+) $11, Children (3 to 12) $8
You’ll find over seventy species of animals and thousands of exotic and native plants here. Special features include a Kiddie Jungle, the Gardens of Christ, a Shell Museum, and Bird and Reptile shows (presented twice a day). A selection of snacks, sandwiches, and cold drinks is offered in the Flamingo Cafe. And it goes almost without saying that there’s a gift shop.

Ringling Museum of Art

The 21-gallery museum is home to one of the world’s most exceptional collections of Baroque art. Stroll through the historic Venetian-style Ringling Mansion, Ca d’Zan, and the delightful collection of rare circus memorabilia in the Museum of the Circus. Reservations suggested. Call 941-358-3180.

St. Armand's Circle

300 Madison Drive, Sarasota; 941-388-1554
Located off mainland Sarasota on Lido Key, this historic district is renowned as a cosmopolitan marketplace, complete with lush tropical plants, courtyards, and antique statuary. Over 150 upscale shops, boutiques, galleries, and fine restaurants are located here. Shop and restaurant hours vary.
