To a great extent, attendance at KSC reflects the seasonal ebb and flow of tourists described in Chapter 1. However, attendance is also greatly affected by the launch schedule at the Kennedy Space Center.
The days before and after a launch tend to be busier than usual as excitement builds in anticipation of the big event. The day of a launch, the Visitor Complex closes for the six hours preceding the blast-off. If the shuttle launches before 9:00 a.m., the center is open all day. Given the fact that launches are frequently delayed, however, the six-hour pre-launch closing can mean that the Visitor Complex will be open for just a few hours or not at all on a launch day.
So even though seeing a launch is one of the neatest things to do while you’re in Florida, a visit to Kennedy Space Center at that time may not be an ideal choice — unless you don’t mind missing some things or will be able to spend more than a day on the Space Coast.
