Doing homework for your visit to Kennedy Space Center is not absolutely necessary, but it helps if you have at least some background knowledge of the space program. A painless way to get that background is to head down to the video store and rent The Right Stuff and Apollo 13. Both films are a lot of fun to watch and offer great insight into the human as well as the technical dimensions of the space program. Somewhat harder to find but worth looking for is the Discovery Channel special, The Space Shuttle.
For information about the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex itself, call (321) 449-4444. Ask for brochures and they will patch you into a voice mail system where you can record your name and address. The brochures are free and take about one week to arrive.
The Visitor Complex brochure, with its schedule of tours and films, can help you plan out your day in advance. Readers with an Internet connection can log on at www.kennedyspacecenter.com and follow the prompts.
Another way to get an advance look at the Center is to call either the (321) number above or (800) 621-9826 and order the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex tour book. It is $5.99, plus $4 shipping and takes about a week to arrive. It doesn’t provide tour and film times but it will certainly whet your appetite and help you decide how to focus your time during your visit.
