Type: Memorial to fallen astronauts
Time: Continuous viewing
Kelly says: Intricate, intriguing, and moving
At first this monument to those who have lost their lives in the space program struck me as a bit of overkill. But as I examined the intricate mechanism that uses the sun’s beams to illuminate the 16 names on this massive memorial, I came to realize how fitting it is to blend the high-tech and the heavenly to honor these special people. The entire memorial tilts and swivels to follow the sun across the sky as mirrors collect and focus the sun’s rays onto clear glass names in a huge black marble slab. From the opposite side the effect is startling. The memorial is handsomely sited at the end of a large pool at the back of the IMAX Theater; a small kiosk on the side of that building houses computers that offer background information on the astronauts honored on the memorial.
