Cypress Gardens: Nature's Theatre

"Swamp Critters"

Rating: * * *
Type: Nature show
Time: 15 minutes
Kelly says: Too short

Nature’s Theatre is a simple tarp-covered amphitheater that serves as the venue for a series of educational nature shows hosted by Cypress Gardens’ staff members, who show off some of their more intriguing charges. Check the schedule for show times.

Exactly what you will see is hard to predict, but generally the show includes at least one raptor, such as a horned owl or red-tailed hawk. The raptors are Cypress Gardens’ lineup of injured birds of prey that can never be released back to the wild and are living out their lives in the comfort and security of the Gardens. They earn their room and board by posing for your photos during this informative presentation. You may also see macaws, baby alligators, and a snake or two. For each animal, the handlers present a fascinating sampler of natural history tidbits. Some critters are paraded in front of the audience for those who wish to touch or take close-up photos.

"Tricks of the Trade"

Rating: * * *
Type: More animal show and tell
Time: 20 minutes
Kelly says: Animal training 101

Cypress Gardens is planning new animal shows and their future stars need to be trained. Since a big part of that training involves getting the little critters used to an audience, their trainers have cleverly decided to turn the training process into a simple but entertaining show.

While a trainer keeps up a steady patter of fun facts about positive reinforcement, animal behaviors, and nature trivia, a series of animals are brought out to greet the crowd. Some go through simple “A to B behaviors,” in which they run along a predetermined route in order to get a rewarding treat. Others are there simply to see and be seen.

"Treasure of Cypress Cove"

Rating: * * +
Type: Slapstick comedy show
Time: 20 minutes
Kelly says: Aimed squarely at the kiddie set

“How much does it cost to get a pirate’s ears pierced?”

“A buck an ear.”

If this is your idea of rollicking humor, you’ll love this show.

Three young guys play an assortment of dim-witted pirates in search of a cursed treasure. With broad humor, excruciating puns, and the occasional spray of water sent into the first several rows of the audience, they keep little kids (and more than a few adults) giggling happily.
