Everything’s just ducky at The Peabody Orlando, starting with the ducks in the lobby. Let me explain.
The Peabody Orlando is an outpost of a Memphis original, which dates back to 1869. In the 1930s, by which time the Peabody had become one of the finest hotels in the South, a mischievous hotel manager snuck some live ducks he had used as hunting decoys (legl back then) into the lobby pool. It was intended as a joke, but it was an instant hit with guests and staff alike and a hotel legend was born.
Today, “teams” of ducks grace the lobbies of the three Peabody Hotels (the third is in Little Rock, Arkansas) and have become so identified with the Peabody brand that they are part of its logo. In fact, duck imagery is everywhere in the hotel. There is duck-shaped soap in the rooms, cute little ducklings on the little shampoo bottles, and lots of duck figurines in the gift shop.
The ducks are a lighthearted touch that belies the Peabody’s serious commitment to quality and service. For many years, the Peabody was considered Orlando’s premier luxury hotel and, while it has some competition now, it consistently wins a four-star rating from the Mobil Travel Guide.
