Here’s an interesting idea — a fast food counter-style operation combined with a compact mini mart and open 24 hours a day. To one side a curving counter offers a number of stations offering a variety of specialties. The Bakery serves up fresh baked goods ideal for that quick breakfast; line up for Sandwiches and get just that, thick stacks of cold cuts with names evoking Old New York; the “Monroe Diner” serves up freshly carved warm meats; and, finally, the Pizzeria offers individual-sized pizzas.
The market carries a variety of nuts, candies, cookies, chips, dips, and other snacks — in short, the sort of thing that will go nicely with drinks in your room. The most substantial offerings are the dried cereal for breakfast, and a small selection of pre-packed fruit platters, sandwiches, and salads.
And speaking of drinks in your room, there is also a good selection of beer and wine, many of which have odd names. Alligator Drool beer anyone? No alcohol sales from 2:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., though.
The 18 Monroe Street name, by the way, is a nod to hotelier Harris Rosen’s boyhood home on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
