Type: Rock show with killer whales
Time: 20 minutes
Kelly says: Shamu and trainers at play
This is the last show of the day in Shamu Stadium when the park is open late. It is somewhat shorter and different in tone but no less exciting and enjoyable. This time around, there’s little or no attempt to “educate” you. Instead, the focus is on ear-splitting rock (with a live guitarist making a splashy cameo appearance) and a dazzling computer-generated video show that really puts those spinning video screens through their paces. The trainers appear in glitzier wet suits, some with red sashes around their waists, and do some disco dance routines designed to coax the audience into joining in.
The whales seems almost an afterthought, which is too bad. Still, they do some amazing things like leaping in tandem or soaring completely out of the water and doing a back flip. In one amazing display, an orca corkscrews through the water while its trainer nimbly runs around its massive midsection, somehow managing to stay upright for the entire ride. I would have liked less rock and more Shamu, but you can’t have everything.
Some things don’t change, however. The show still ends with a barrage of water to the lower seating area. Why tamper with success?
