The giant oak tree stump with the gnarled bark that bears an uncanny resemblance to the face of Merlin is actually another beautifully designed restaurant. The interior is a masterful evocation of the inside of a vast and ancient oak that soars to a star-flecked skylight of mystical blue. The lighting, provided by hanging lamps and wall-mounted sconces, is dim and spooky. In fact, the setting is so magical that Merlin himself sometimes puts in an appearance.
Along the gnarled and knotted walls you can find little nooks and crannies forming private booths. One of them even has a huge fireplace complete with cauldron. Out the back door, overlooking the jungles of Jurassic Park, is a spacious terrace dining area, much of it shaded and protected from the elements by a sturdy thatched roof. The atmosphere alone is worth a visit and, indoors or out, this is one of the nicest places to eat in all of Islands of Adventure.
The service here is fast food cafeteria-style and the food is “hickory-smoked” barbecue. The “Legendary Entrees” include chicken, turkey leg, and rib platters. They run from $9 to $13 and come with fries, roasted corn on the cob, and a corn muffin, all of which can also be ordered as side dishes. Desserts are $3 and the Caramel Apple Pie is worth a try.
At the opposite end from the food counters is the Alchemy Bar, which has a separate entrance from the plaza outside. It is a full service bar serving everything from very good Scotch, to Guinness on tap, to margaritas. With its low ceiling and gnarled walls, it is a terrifically atmospheric pub and a favorite haunt during Happy Hour.
