It’s perfectly possible to arrive at Universal Studios knowing nothing about any of the films or TV shows on which its attractions are based (although it’s hard to imagine that being possible), and have a perfectly good time. Indeed, you don’t need to understand a word of English to be entertained here, as the happy hordes of foreign tourists prove.
Nonetheless, there is one attraction which, in my humble opinion, will benefit from a bit of research prior to your visit. E.T. Adventure will make a lot more sense to those who have seen the film. This is especially true for younger kids who might find E.T.’s odd appearance a bit off-putting if they haven’t seen the film. Fortunately, this is the kind of homework that’s easy and fun to do. Any well-stocked video rental store will have all the research material you need. While you’re there, you might want to rent Shrek and Jimmy Neutron as well, if only to whet the kids’ appetites for their visit.
As for Jaws, Earthquake, the Mummy, and Twister, while they’re all based on popular films, knowing the films adds little to the fun of the rides.
