Orlando's not a one-mouse town and this is the site that proves it! |
Orlando's stock car action is not in Orlando proper, but fans probably won’t mind traveling a short distance to get their speed fix, especially since one of the nearby tracks is the Daytona Speedway. Daytona, of course, hosts NASCAR’s legendary “Daytona 500” in February. Closest to Orlando is Orlando SpeedWorld, on the eastern fringes of the city. It is home to the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing every February, a nine-night event featuring the best short track racers from the U.S., Canada, and even Europe. On a somewhat less exalted level is its Crash-A-Rama, which has gained some notoriety thanks to Spike TV. The New Smyrna Speedway, run by the same folks who own Orlando SpeedWorld, is actually 10 miles closer to Orlando than Daytona (cheaper, too!). This track hosts the annual Florida Governor's Cup 200. A smaller inner track races quarter midgets on Friday nights. Finally, to the west of Orlando, the USA International Speedway in Lakeland lets you watch speed trials for free. The catch is, they don't announce when they are happening. Orlando SpeedWorld Season: Year round Daytona International Speedway Season: NASCAR races in February (the Daytona 500) and July; other events in other months New Smyrna Speedway Season: Year round USA International Speedway Season: January to November; 8 to 10 events a year, call for schedule Didn't find what you were looking for?
