Sports Scores - Auto Racing - Dragsters, Motocross |
Amateurs race for the love of it at two sets of racing venues that lie within driving distance of Orlando’s main tourist areas. One is to the east of Orlando on busy State Route 50 and the other a short drive down Interstate 4 in Lakeland at Exit 38. If you’re staying near Disney, it may be easier to get to the Lakeland tracks. The Lakeland track has two distinct styles. The dirt or clay tracks (which are subject to the vagaries of the Florida weather) is where you want to be for BMX bicycles, motocross, stock cars, and four-wheel-drive Mud Boggs (modified trucks). The drag strips use a straight paved track with bleachers, including a platform for wheelchairs.
In Orlando, Bithlo Motorsports specializes in motocross, an especially exciting form of motorcycle racing featuring rugged bikes competing on bumpy dirt tracks. The drag strip in Orlando is much like that at Lakeland. There’s usually something going on at all these tracks on the weekends, with additional events on some weeknights, but it’s a good idea to call the track or check online for current information.
