The little town of Winter Park has 17 lakes. Thanks to the operators of these modest, flat pontoon boats, you can visit three of them on a leisurely one-hour cruise. You slip between the lakes through narrow canals originally cut by logging crews in the 1800s and barely wide enough to accommodate the tour boat. It’s not quite Venice but it makes for an unusual and relaxing outing.
There’s plenty of bird life to be seen on this tour and your guide will dutifully point out the wading herons, muscovy ducks, and ospreys nesting high in the cypress trees. Less frequently sighted, but there nonetheless, are alligators, some of them quite large. There’s also a bit of local history to take in, from the campus of Rollins College to the palatial 1898 Brewer estate, the only Winter Park home on the National Historic Register.
But, this tour is really about real estate envy. As you glide past one gorgeous multimillion dollar home after another, their impeccably landscaped backyards cascading down to boathouses that coyly echo the architecture of the big house, you will find yourself asking, “Why them and not me? Why, why, why?
