The cheerfully ramshackle set of buildings perched on the edge
of a swampy backwater in the middle of nowhere give Midway Airboat
Tours the look of a movie set for some post-apocalyptic Mad Max
adventure.
But the featureless desolation of the immediate surroundings
is deceptive because a short distance away, over the swamp grass,
are the wide expanses of the St. John’s River. Midway runs economical 30- to 40-minute tours through the edges,
nooks, and crannies of this fascinating ecosystem aboard 20-passenger
airboats. Each trip covers about six or seven miles with gator
sightings the primary goal. During the spring, this is also prime
bald eagle habitat.
Night tours are $25 for adults and $15 for
children, with a minimum of five adults per boat; 24-hour advance
reservations are required. The night tours use spotlights to point
