The Orlando music scene is far too fleeting and fluid to cover in a guidebook, but if you like your music live rest assured that you will have plenty of opportunity to indulge yourself during your Orlando vacation.
For classical music fans, there is the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, (407) 896-6700, www.orlandophil.org, which presents a dozen or so concerts each year in a variety of venues including the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center mentioned earlier. That same downtown arena plays host to the usual array of aging rock stars and pop headliners, while the local bar and club scene serves up a wide variety of musical offerings from folk, to ethnic, to rhythm and blues, to country-western. Orlando has also garnered a reputation as an incubator of teen pop groups. If your taste lies in this direction you may be able to catch some rising stars.
The best way to plug into the music scene is the “Calendar” section in Friday’s Orlando Sentinel which lists all musical performances for the week, arranged helpfully by genre, along with a list of web sites for local bands. A “Calendar” page in the daily Sentinel lists that day’s offerings. The free Orlando Weekly also has extensive coverage of the local music scene. For those whose tastes run to classical music, the magazine Orlando Arts, available at museums and other cultural hangouts, lists upcoming events.
