If you’re in Orlando during May and your tastes run towards experimental theater, you won’t want to miss this theatrical feast.
For 10 days, from noon to midnight, the streets of downtown and Loch Haven Park are given over to an international smorgasbord of traditional theater, cabaret, performance art, and street acts. A typical Festival will see over 500 performances by more than 50 groups from around the world. Most of the fare is decidedly adult, sometimes X-rated, but a parallel Fringe features fare for younger folks. Most of the shows are indoors, but there are some outdoor performance venues.
To attend, you must first purchase a $5 button, which serves as a sort of cover charge for the Festival’s shows. You then pay an additional $1 to $10 for each show you see, although some shows are free; if you purchase tickets in advance of the day of performance an additional $1 fee is levied. The Festival is not as geographically compact as it once was, but a printed program lets you know what’s coming up next and helps you plan your route from site to site. Veteran Festival-goers suggest quizzing others making the round of shows for suggestions on what’s worth seeing and what should be avoided like the plague. Call the number above for the exact dates and location of this year’s bash.
