The Cornell Fine Arts Museum has luxurious digs overlooking Lake Virginia on the Rollins College campus. The collection’s emphasis is on European and American painting of the last three centuries. It is the oldest art collection in the state and boasts a permanent collection of over 5,000 objects, ranging from Old Masters to twentieth century abstractionists.
Typically, two of the museum’s six galleries are given over to special exhibitions, such as recent ones showcasing contemporary prints and Winslow Homer’s illustrations of the Civil War, while two other galleries feature some choice examples from the permanent collection. The remaining space is given over to the print collection and educational activities. Many exhibits are locally curated and draw either from the permanent collection or from private and public collections in Florida, offering the art lover the opportunity to view works that would otherwise be impossible to see. For other exhibits, the Cornell joins forces with smaller museums across the country to mount distinguished traveling shows. Exhibits, which run from six to eight weeks, range from retrospectives of a single artist, to highlights of distinguished private collections, to surveys of important movements, to themed shows illuminating genres and techniques.
