What easier way to appreciate the pristine wilderness of the “real Florida” than to glide gently past it in a canoe? Katie’s is a small RV and camper resort along the banks of the Wekiva River that offers canoe excursions along some of Central Florida’s most beautiful waterways. There are six expeditions to choose from.

The Little Wekiva River Run is their most popular and it’s easy to see why. The scenery is drop-dead gorgeous and there are plenty of turtles and birds to be seen. You might also glimpse an alligator. The shoreline varies from well-manicured backyards to impenetrable jungles. They estimate five to six hours for this nine-mile trip, although inexperienced paddlers may take longer. The Rock Springs Run is a 19-mile, all day marathon and paddlers have the option of making it an overnight trip (for an additional $10.50), with primitive camping in Wekiva State Park. For these trips, you are driven to drop-off points upstream and end your trip back at Katie’s.Two other trips head downstream from Katie’s and require that you arrive at pick- up points by specified times. They are the St. John’s River Run (6 miles, 2 to 3 hours) and the Blue Springs Run (12 miles, 5 to 6 hours). The latter involves some six miles on the St. John’s River with its motorized traffic and is recommended for experienced canoers only. Both these trips require a minimum of four adults. If you’d like to spend the night, Katie’s can accommodate you in one of six air-conditioned log cabins. Rates are $60 double per night with a two-night minimum or $375 for the week. RVs pay $20 per day for two people plus $2 per day for each additional person age two or older. Campers get a 20% discount on canoe rentals.
