Central Florida offers some excellent opportunities for birders, experienced or not. For the novice, there’s the spectacle of the spring nesting season at Gatorland, described in Chapter 4. More experienced birders will want to head for the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge (Chapter 14); during the winter months it is one of the country’s premier birding destinations.
Bird watching is pretty much a do-it-yourself activity, but there are some organized activities. Several area Audubon Societies offer periodic field trips, which are listed on their web sites:
Orange Audubon Society
Kissimmee Valley Audubon Society
Ridge Audubon Society (Lake Wales area)
Indian River Audubon Society (Kennedy Space Center area)
