The Florida Citrus Tower is a monument to a vanished industry. While I was visiting, another tourist told of coming here as a child in the fifties. “All you could see was miles and miles of orange trees,” he remembered. “There’s not much to see now.” A series of devastating freezes over the past two decades has forced Florida’s citrus industry farther south. Today, the fields around the Tower are more likely to hold a new subdivision.
From the observation platform at the tower’s top you can see 35 miles in all directions. You can even make out downtown Orlando and the taller buildings at Disney World in the hazy distance. Later, you’ll be able to argue that you were as high as it is possible to get in the state of Florida. (Historic Bok Sanctuary in Lake Wales, see Chapter 14, also claims this distinction.)
Nearby: Lakeridge Winery, Presidents Hall of Fame.
