Kelly says: Rock with a North African roll
On a thrust stage with Moorish arches and purple curtains, this peppy revue pays homage to the Morocco theme using a succession of rock standards with North African overtones. If tunes like “Rock the Casbah” and “Walk Like an Egyptian” ring a bell then you get the idea.
A Jim Carrey-esque master of ceremonies in peddler’s robes and a fez cracks jokes as ancient as any pyramid and coaxes “volunteers” from the audience between numbers. The performers are attractive young singers and dancers, along with a trumpeter and electric guitarist. Sometimes the theme gets a little lost as “Midnight at the Oasis” segues into “Living La Vida Loca.” By show’s end all pretense disappears in rousing renditions of “Old Time Rock and Roll” and “The Heart of Rock ‘n Roll.” There are some very competent pop voices in the ensemble and the dancing makes up in showbiz pizzazz what it lacks in precision. After the show, some of the performers mingle with the audience for photo ops.
