Busch Gardens Africa - Crown Colony & Egypt: Introduction

This area, officially known as Egypt, actually combines two distinctly themed environments. Crown Colony takes its theme from the great British colonial enclaves of East Africa, where the well-heeled lived the good life and played cricket and polo while being waited on by the unshod. A real British Colonial would probably not recognize the place, but for the rest of us it’ll do just fine. The overall impression is one of casual elegance and good taste. Crown Colony serves as a comfortable home to several attractions (like the Clydesdale stables, and the Show Jumping Hall of Fame) that stretch the African metaphor a bit. It is also the home of the Crown Colony House, a very nice full-service sit-down restaurant.

Egypt is one of Busch Gardens’ smallest lands, at least in terms of strolling space and amenities. Its primary purpose is to give the mega-coaster Montu a home. The King Tut attraction seems a bit of an afterthought, and the only eatery here is a kiosk dispensing snacks. The shopping is a bit more elaborate but not much.

The design evokes upper Egypt as it might have looked about the time Howard Carter was unearthing King Tut’s treasure. The scale is appropriately grandiose but the statuary and wall carvings fall well short of the originals. Still, it’s pleasant enough. There’s a clever “archaeological dig, ” called Sifting Sands, that is, in fact, a shaded sand box in which little ones can uncover the past. A small selection of midway games is also offered.

For most people, however, Egypt will be glimpsed briefly en route to the massive temple gates at the end, beyond which lurks the terrifying Montu.
